Being a big picture thinker your blog is great to read and see that others see the world from your view too.

I turned my gift to look at the sporting world and it's amazing what you can come up with that no one else has seen, especially from a coaching aspect though getting others to see what you can see in a detail orientated world can prove a challange.

If you want a big picture problem to work on, go with, how do you instill a growth mindset into the majority, for if you can do that a lot of societies problems and issues would dissappear.

wow... the way in which you think is EXACTLY me too. I love focusing on these gifts rather than the attention deficit because i am so with you that there so many gifts in ADD. i am so glad to have stumbled upon your blog because it's as if you're speaking to me in virtually every post. will keep referring to it for inspiration. feels SO good to know i am not the only one wired this way. have always felt lonely because i struggled to relate to others. this sure helps, though.

For me it was a revelation because, suddenly a lot of my life became much more clear to me. That and I took Myers-Briggs in grad school - you know the INTJ type thing INFJ, etc? I'm INTJ which is the weirdest of the bunch too. I relate well to very few people when talking about deep subjects... lol. It's not so fun to work on seeing the details - but, if you can do it, you'll round yourself out better. Thanks for writing Larry! Cheers!

What a great piece! I'm so happy to have found this. I was also blessed/cursed with the ability to see the big picture. It's a blessing because we see and understand concepts that other people may NEVER understand. They just cannot see what we see - a very frustrating experience I'm sure for those who know what I'm talking about! With that said, it is also a curse, because we will usually be misunderstood. I go to a prestigious university, but find it hard to talk to others who get bogged down in the details! And I try to explain things to people and they start talking about details! And this word and that word! They miss the big idea, the abstract concept I am attempting to convey. I'm glad to find people like me and I agree 100% with the article. I feel very comfortable around big thinkers like me - we need to stick together, because we understand each other.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for writing. I think seeing the big picture is rather rare. I don't know too many people like me in that regard either. Yes, you feel out of place because nobody is talking to you about the stuff that matters - the entire idea, not just the details. I can see the details - as they make up the big picture, but I sure don't like to focus on them. If forced to focus on them I'm obsessive about getting them perfect because i know that in the big picture, even the small details matter. You ARE a genius Tim. :) Cheers, Vern

by the way… mindingthedetails' response is the essence of the inability to see the big picture. My polar opposite lol. But im glad that we are all so different. Sometimes I wish I could see details so well.

Excellent piece. Thanks for sharing.

I've always been a 'big picture thinker,' and only lately, have I become to understand why sometimes I feel out of place. Im only 23, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people what I see- sometimes I wonder if they even can. I go to a fairly reputable university, and in some classes (typically writing, philosophy, art, language, etc) my teachers and peers look at me like im some sort of genius… even though i might think its all rather simple. But the corollary is illustrated when im in classes like math, chemistry, etc… where I might be the stupidest person out of the entire room. NO JOKE.

I have many great accomplishment and many great failures lol. But all in all, I am confident that my abilities are a unique set of tools that not others have. I only wish there was more information on this stuff… advice and what not…

thank you again

I find this (blog?) post a bit...disappointing. I was expecting it to contain some instruction on -how- to see the big picture, but more or less it seems to be you reaffirming to yourself and the reading public how much you esteem your ability to do so.

Might I suggest that "seeing the big picture" requires these talents/skills/habits/undertakings:

1) Understand what your goal (or the organization's goal) is in its simplest form.
2) Personal Knowledge of what Resources will be required to meet that goal. This requires research and/or a consultant.
3) Assemble the Resources that you've just determined from research you will need.
4) Set A Deadline. Knowing the costs in resources, effort, and time for each process enables you to determine your overall project timeline. And also enables you to determine how much any errors or processes will cost you if you run behind.
5) Ability to Monitor the Progress of the work being carried out and determine its efficiency. Are there too many processes involved? Can it be simplified? Or...will more resources be needed?
6) Prioritization. The Ability to Understand Which Processes are Most Important to Meeting the Goal. Also, it's The Willingness to kill a process that isn't necessary--or AS necessary--in meeting your basic goal.
7) The Ability to continuously hold in your mind "the big picture" a.k.a. the End Goal--and to evauluate every decision with it in mind.

If I collapsed your essay into its basic essence, it's seems like you've made three statements. 1) I can see the big picture; 2) I mind the details; and 3) I deem these two things important.

This seemed kind of circular logic. And I was disappointed because the tone of your writing suggested you want to help others gain the skill of what you do naturally.

I myself struggle to see the big picture at times, but your post definitely helped me identify what I do wrong. I either perform poor research at the beginning, or forget to constantly evaluate my decisions and determine if they're efficiently helping me meet my end goal.

Thank You for Posting :)

Thanks, Vern, for a great blog.

I found this by searching for "big picture" because I have been noticing how most people are blind to it, and I wondered if anyone else noticed--so it was great to find this piece.

To me, the big picture is the point of view of the "artist" personality. We have to see how pieces fit the whole, whether it's a design, a melody, or a phrase. And it seems fairly rare.

Thanks again!

I am more than please to kick this thing off with a Wowie Zow, what a fantastic read! I am every bit like you in that I see the bigger picture and leave out the menial stuff simply because it's small change. I let the small change specialists do the fussing over that stuffola.
