Ouch! Lahaina, Maui Shark Bite

A sixteen year old girl was bitten by a shark off the west coast of Maui in front of Hololani Resort and suffered a 5 inch gash on her calf. Beaches were closed for the day.

This location is exactly where I used to do some spearfishing years ago. I have never seen a shark in those waters, but a tigershark attacked a surfer further down the beach in Kahana while I was there.

There are turtles in that area – it is a very flat ridge that gets deeper very gradually, seems like more sharks would be spotted there. I don’t think there is a protective reef straight out from there, I was out pretty far (1/2 mile or so), and never saw a big reef.
