New Twitter User: What? Who? Why? Video

You’ve probably either adopted Twitter and are using it – or, you’re wondering what it is. If you’re on this site reading this – I’m guessing you’re in one of those two camps.

Months ago, maybe it was a year ago even I remember signing up for Twitter and trying to figure it out. Why would someone use Twitter? I didn’t get it. Then I found a widget that allowed me to put a Twitter chat-box on my website in a right hand column. Whenever I twat – (past tense of tweet – at least that’s how I say it) whatever I said on Twitter came up on my site. That was cool for about a week and then I wondered again…

“WHY would anyone use Twitter?”

I wasn’t “getting it”. I uninstalled the widget and wrote Twitter off as some geek toy that will be gone as soon as the rest of the users realize it’s giving them nothing back in return for telling about whatever they’re doing every few minutes.

But, Twitter didn’t go away.

About 2 months ago I realized – Twitter is getting even more popular and many of the top bloggers were talking about it in their posts like Twitter was the next greatest thing and will surpass Google in relevant searches and ease of finding information.

HUH? If that was true I had to get back in the game. I immediately signed up again, this time as “http://twitter.com/AimforAwesome” and dove into the mess – trying to figure out what Twitter was all about, who it was good for and why someone would want to use it.

Here’s the video >

Right click the file and choose save target or save file as – and save to your desktop. Use latest free version of QuickTime to open it, or any MP4 player.

I created this 23 minute video to go over WHAT Twitter is, WHO might want to use it, and WHY you might want to use it.

It’s my 1st attempt with this screencapture program and voice over and this isn’t scripted so it flows right along. If you have any comments or questions – ask them in the comments and I’ll do the best I can to answer them. Hopefully others will chime in and answer in case I’m stumped. I’m NOT a Twitter power-user yet and there’s much I don’t know about it… the game is changing all the time too.

Twitter is something you DO want to be a part of – trust me on that.

Great video on Twitter. Didn’t see the point in Twitter before.Thanks.

Thanks Fabien… In hindsight I realize I sort of blew through it. There’s so much information to cover and I didn’t go about it slowly that’s for sure. I assumed some knowledge of things already – because I’m so comfortable… didn’t stop and think it through, just blitzed straight ahead! I’m considering re-doing it. Glad you found it helpful! Tell Fanny I said “HI!”

Sorry, but I can’t resist this:

In good old UK slang, ‘twat’ is either a semi-vulgar term for a vagina, or a term meaning to strike someone. Eg: “He looked at me in a funny way, so I twatted him”

I sincerely hope that this new definition for twat gets widely adopted soon and certainly shall promote it myself.

Today I twitter, yesterday I twatted.

It just *has* to be done! :-)

Ahh, yes – I was afraid someone would say that… It’s all in the pronunciation. When I say it – it rhymes with “at” or “bat, cat, sat, mat, fat” not “ought, bought, caught, rot”. See – when said like I say it – it isn’t vulgar and it makes a lot of sense – I like it better than “tweeted”. That’s just me though – use what you like! lol – I knew this wouldn’t go unnoticed, and yet I didn’t see the problem until after I wrote the word down and said, “Hey, that looks like…_____” but, I decided that there’s a big enough difference in pronouncing it that it should avoid any problems… :)
