Vern-it looks like you have been living with this question for a while. I read your book, and it mirrors my questioning process as well. Thanks for giving the real, straight goods to teens early in your little book. A lot of them really need to get that message, as well as the questions posed in the rest of the book. It was pretty distressing for me to read all the notes from teens that were having trouble during high school. I played soccer and had great friends, so I had an outlet – something great going on in my life. Dad wasn’t there. Mom and I were at odds with each other most times. I needed things my way. I was in conflict and it was making me wacko. I couldn’t imagine kids that are going through so much worse… without friends, without a group of people that respect them outside of the home. What of teens that have no friends and their home life sucks? That’s a heartbreaker to think about. Not to mention kids whose mothers are prostitutes, or parents are on crack, or have a cleft lip, or 6 toes, or any of the thousands of things that can make life really tough for a kid.
I am thinking of writing a book to address the whole issue – but, who would buy it? Teens without $? Their parents? That will probably be another freebie book. It definitely needs made.
