We have a number of online business – ebusiness projects going on.
One of them is over at JoysThaiFood.com where we are selling her ebook with the idea that when she stops working because she’s too heavy (pregnant) to work – she can go back to doing what she loves – cooking Thai food and telling everyone else how to do it through video and her articles.
What is the right price for an ebook?
Of course content matters. But, assuming you have an ebook about something that is in demand, Thai food recipes and cooking instructions for instance, what is the right price people will pay for it?
That’s what I’m experimenting with at JoysThaiFood.com blog today.
We’ve run a $39.90 promotion for about a month now through Google’s Adsense system. We haven’t had a sale yet. Update: We’ve had a few sales, not enough.
If you’re interested in the sales landing page – it’s here:
Joy’s Thai Food Recipe Ebook >
Before you say $39 is too much – we have sold about 5 ebooks at this price previously before dropping the price and selling more. Without all the bonuses we’re giving away with this offer.
In your opinion – does anyone care about the bonuses or should we leave them out?
Or, lower the price a few dollars and leave the bonuses in?
What’s the ideal price-point for a printable PDF ebook about Thai food recipes?
Does subject matter that much? If we were selling Hawaiian food cookbooks – would that make them more or less valuable since there aren’t as many available? There are some amazing foods from Hawaii, but, unfortunately neither I nor my Thai wife have any idea how to make them!

Yes, I now appreciate what a very difficult balancing act it is to get the price right. In view of all you have to take into consideration, 29.90 doesn’t seem unreasonable. I wish you many, many sales, and perhaps, in due course, you can give us an update. All good wishes.
Well Vern, since you ask … looking at the website of a certain well known online seller of books, the most expensive currently-available (i.e. ignoring the used and new section) Thai cookery book I can find is $26.56. Most of the others are much cheaper. I’m no expert at pricing and have no idea how much you and Joy have invested in producing JoysThaiFood, but if I were in the market for a an ebook on Thai cooking I don’t think I would be looking to pay more than $25 (with bonuses) $20 (without). If it cost any more than that then I think I’d opt for an ordinary book. With best wishes to you and Joy and thanks for a fascinating and engaging website.
Hi Laurie, thanks for writing.
I decided we’d drop the price to 29.90 and see what happens. There is a point below which – people get turned off. Selling an ebook for $4.99 would seem like we’re peddling junk which we’re not. Pricing is an interesting game. Joy created the ebook – so, it was her time and effort that went into it. At 101 pages it was quite an effort. At 29.90 we can still pay affiliates at Clickbank – 50% of what we make and still have something. Once we drop below 29 we’ll have to remove the gold thai amulet bonus because it’s a big cost. We’ll see what happens at $29!
If I’m interested in an ebook then I’ll buy it if I feel the price is reasonable. For me, bonuses are irrelevant. I’ve bought ebooks and never got round to using the bonus items. There seem to be so many ebooks out there costing far more than most hardcover books – let alone paperbacks – the cost presumably justified in the seller’s mind by the amount of free(?) stuff included in the deal. My advice would be to drop the bonuses and also, if you can afford to do so, the price. Kind regards.
Hi Laurie – thank you for your comment. We are thinking to lower the price… what is the perfect price with and without the bonuses in your mind?
