I use Twitter a couple times a day just to check in – respond to replies and direct messages I got from people I’m connected with on the service. I use TweetDeck – it’s quite a bit easier to use than the Twitter.com home page. Try it if you haven’t already.
Is Twitter just hype-fueled nonsense or is it really taking off among mainstream online populations?
One can’t help but notice that the ones that are really into Twitter are those that are using it for internet marketing purposes. I make it a point to tweet about blog posts I create here and at IncAnswers.com if I think they’re interesting and can help others.
I like the searches that can be done on Twitter – but, I’ve used them for purely curiosity and not to try to recruit new viewers for my websites. I can see where some businesses could really use Twitter to their advantage right now.
But, is anyone paying attention?
I read an article this morning that really puts a perspective on the whole Twitter phenomenon. Apparently 10% of Twitter’s members are responsible for 90% of the Twitter chat going on, so says a Harvard Business School study recently. That’s much different from other social media services.
It’s a case of people not really understanding what they can do with Twitter. Or, not needing what it can do. I can’t imagine my mom using it. My brother isn’t using it – he’s very tech savvy – a software tester. In fact, I don’t have any friends using Twitter that I haven’t met online. I have many friends with websites, with internet marketing skills that I’ve known pre-Twitter. None of them are using it.
Purewire, who operates TweetGrade, looked at 7 million Twitter accounts and found that fully 80% of accounts have less than 10 followers! 30% have no followers!
In my own case – Twitter could go away tomorrow and that would be OK with me. I’d miss it a little bit. Life wouldn’t come to a halt though.
What I use it for mostly is keeping in contact with people I’ve yet to meet in Hawaii on the various islands. Twitter is a good way to meet people living in Hawaii – or any location, that you are either moving to or live in currently.
What is the power of Twitter among mainstream internet users?
Are you using Twitter? Are your friends tweeting?
If Twitter went away tomorrow would you care? Get upset?
What is the benefit Twitter offers you on a daily basis? For your business?
I think for most of us – the answers just aren’t so clear. Sure it’s popular. Sure it’s fun. Sure it’s great to share information and find up to the minute conversations about topics we’re interested in.
Where does it go from there? When does it become really applicable to the Operah Audience? LOL – I can’t even spell Operah! I’m sure this is wrong because it looks wrong, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what the correct spelling is. I tried ‘Opera’ and that’s obviously not it either. Actually, there’s no reason I should know how to spell it… throw away your TV, take control of your life…
Here’s the article I read this morning that inspired me…

Twitter just seems like a severely impaired version of Facebook. Your Facebook status updates, which is basically 1% of what you can do with Facebook (I’m making that number up, just to illustrate a point), is what Twitter is….and that’s all what Twitter is. Whether for personal reasons or business reasons, Facebook is just a more well rounded avenue for your voice to be heard. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Before a couple days ago Markus I’d say I was starting to go along with your line of thinking on this… Twitter appears to be for people talking about TV shows and internet marketers trying to hype / sell something. I bailed out… however, as of two days ago Google and Bing bought the rights to spider through, index, all the Twitter data. Now Twitter gains meaning to everyone that thinks it’s important to show up in Google. Like me. So, all the sudden Twitter makes sense again, but we’ll see what’s necessary to show up in the search results. Whole businesses will be built around just that idea – tweeting with the intent to get into Google’s top SERP’s. BTW – I saw your profile Markus – you’re from PA, eh? Me too – Pittsburgh side. Stay warm up there!
I agree that I use twitter for my internet business purposes and I did gain some from using it to my advantage.
I’ve made new FRIENDS on twitter, increase my subscribers base and did some sales here and there.
If twitter were to go tomorrow, I’ll live but gonna miss it..
Life go on..
