Actually there is a good explanation for why this works. Respiratory function and blood flow are heavily associated with sleeping patterns. When your arms are folded especially at the shoulder you put pressure on the carotid artery which makes you feel sleepy due to slowed blood flow.

Ha! I've never had that experience Jen. Does it feel like a brain freeze? Can you still think? Does it feel like you have no head?

That's great - thanks for sharing.

Nice - yeah, the fetal position is probably the most comfortable position to lie down in. There was a guy in the Air Force we all made fun of because he laid in the fetal position as he slept. I'm not sure why it was hilarious - except that we all knew he had issues. Is it funny now? Not at all really. We change a lot over the years - and that's a good thing. Thanks for your comment Derin.

My head has fallen asleep before (the skin on the back of my head). It's the same reason any other part of you falls asleep - reduced blood flow.
I will give this position a try tonight.

I think you feel comfortable because of the 9 months you spent in your mother's womb, all careless and fully protected.
I have a technique too. I lay on my back and relax my muscles strating from the legs and feet and go up. I move a little when I reach my arms, back and neck. The most difficult part to relax is the face, especially the forehead. When I finally relax my face, I jump into sleep immediatly. It has always worked for me.

Thailand will do that to you. When I first got here I wondered if I was going to be able to sleep through some of the noise. I've always fallen easily to sleep, but I wondered. It's been 4 yrs. I sleep like a baby every night... amidst the small geckos (gin-joke), big tokay geckos (too-geh), 32 chickens just outside the house (we feed them sometimes), dogs barking for no good reason and howling at the moon in packs of 10 or so. Motorbikes without proper exhaust (though still quite legal apparently) blasting down the road in 1am races held usually on the weekends. Hmm, what else. Oh - the cows mooing - I never lived on a farm in the states, but I wouldn't have any problem adjusting now. Thanks for writing Sarah!

Hi Vern
Not sure if my last comment went through.

I found that i had a similar reaction. When i was in thailand, the only way i could sleep better is if i had pillows smothering my head so no light or sound could creep in. I am a light sleeper- this changed fast due to the brightness, barking dogs, those cars with speaker phones driving up and down the neighborhood?, loud birds, and all the rest of noise pollution!! That was how i adjusted. Now i have to sleep with a pillow over my face everynight, despite living in a quiet small town.

cool tip.

Thats funny that this happened as a reaction to thailand. I had a lot of trouble with the noise when i was there because i am a light sleeper. That changed fast. I started sleeping with a pillow over my face, which blocked out some of those cars with those loud speakers, the dogs, the lights, the birds, etc. But i find that if i don't have the pillow smothered over my face i cant fall asleep!

@C5 - me too - coffee works for me. How that happens? I haven't the slightest - maybe you know?

@Dave - every neighborhood in Thailand has obnoxious dogs it seems. Mine too. I got used to them. They can bark and howl all night - and it doesn't bother me! 30+ Chickens outside too... no problem. Cows mooing. No problem. 50 frogs after a rain... no problem. I don't know what happened to me. Am I becoming Thai?

@ Maui Girl - same here! I love to fall asleep on my stomach... but in the morning my back hurts so bad I vow not to ever do it again. I do this repeatedly just because it feels great at first. ha!

@ Barb - your HEAD falls asleep? I've never heard of that. I wouldn't have any advice except - figure that out!

I do the head between two pillows thing too. Must be similar to the hands over head/face. I'll try that too!

I always found sleeping on my stomach got me to fall asleep really quickly. But it hurts my neck so I can't do it anymore.

I agree 100% with your methods. Here is my own:

My neighborhood is full of f&^$&# barking dogs. I cannot sleep now unless my head is sandwiched between 2 pillows with my one arm draped over the top pillow and my hand wedged between the headboard and mattress compressing my arms and pillows against my head. I sleep like a baby.

Also, ive noticed I can sleep faster when I am more face down. Maybe just a personal tick.

When I can't fall asleep, I drink coffee. :)
I can't breathe if I have something heavy on my head.

Haha! Interesting post Vern.

I'm going to try them tonight. :)

Frankly, I used to have problems with sleeping that I needed sleeping pills. That was months ago. I have since learned to fall asleep within 10 mins of lying into bed, and it works most of the nights. Thank God, no more sleeping pills.

If you don't mind, I just like to share my experiences about sleep here: (I posted a link directly on the post Lawrence, thanks for the heads-up!)

Hi Vern

This is a really good hack. Simple and useful. I never have trouble sleeping, but my wife does sometimes, so I am going to show her this and see if it works for her too.

Good sleep is a luxury that I think we all deserve.

Thanks
