Yesterday I was contacted by an artist, Kelly O’Neill, about creating some logos for a project I’m working on for a friend.
When I went to her site 2 things really struck me about her:
1. She can draw in charcoal and paint with oil exceptionally well. I thought the samples on her site were photographs. I’m still having a hard time understanding that anyone can draw that well.
2. She really understands marketing. Making it as an artist, even if you’re exceptionally talented as she obviously is, is not easy.
Kelly shows us how to do what it takes. Her Volkswagon is a rolling advertisement for exactly what she does. If she lived in LA, Chicago or New York I think she’d have more work than she could stand. She’d be turning people away everyday just out of sheer lack of hours in the day.
Are you shy about telling your neighborhood what you do for a living? Do all of the neighbors on your street and everyone you pass in the car daily know what you do for a living? Is using your car as a billboard not something you’d consider?
If you could get over whatever presupposed embarrassment that you think might result from decorating your car as a marketing tool it could be a great source of new business for you. What if you hired Kelly to create a design for your car?!!
Personally, I’m all for it and I think Kelly should go on an extended road-trip and drive around the country a few times – or even hire someone to do it for her! Choose places like Miami, Chicago, and other major cities and just drive around. Even though gas is expensive I think she’d pull huge numbers of jobs after art directors and others in advertising agencies see her website and what she can do.
Sitting at your computer and sending email to people that you want to let know “I’m an artist!” is one way to go about it – and you’ve gotta do it. Finding new business by using an interesting design on your car to market yourself is an effortless way to market YOU or your business.
What’s holding you back from doing exactly what you want to do for a career?
