I’ve never lived in Hawaii without car, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go on without one. If you’re planning on visiting Hawaii, I would rent a car on a day-to-day on an as-needed basis. If you’re planning on living here, you could get by with a moped but I assure you that won’t last long once you bike through a few rains especially since we get light rains (aka “Mauka Showers”) here in the morning nearly all the time.

I think people moving should definitely learn the language & take part to become part of any community.

One tipp for people moving to the Islands: learning how the place names are said is easiest on The Bus, which btw. provides great service (yes, that might be different if you work, I know ;-) ). Met people who lived here 20, 30 years and still didn’t know how to pronounce the name of the town they live in. imho that is quite disrespectful
