Finding Hawaii Employment Using RSS Feeds at Craigslist

Navigation:/, hawaii jobs/Finding Hawaii Employment Using RSS Feeds at Craigslist

RSS (Rich Site Summary, or Really Simple Syndication) feeds are nothing more than a push of information that arrives at your computer, tablet, phone, or whatever gadget you use. RSS use is declining in this social media world, but, I still use it and so do millions of people around the world. We use RSS because it’s helpful. You’ll see that in a few minutes.

Start this process from a computer, it’s easier.

Then, you can either follow the text instructions below, or, click below to see the video instructions where I walk you through it with screenshot video of how to do this quickly and painlessly.

Click here for the video instructions. (coming soon)

Text Instructions for Setting Up RSS Feeds for Your Job Search:

Step 1 – Setup Feedly.com.

Go to Feedly.com and sign up for an account.

Step 2 – Go to Honolulu.craigslist.org

Step 3 – See this?

Hawaii Jobs Search Box Craigslist

Choose “jobs” from the drop-down menu

Enter keywords to search for jobs that might match your skills.

I used “internet writer” for my keywords, don’t use quotation marks.

Click the > button to search for job listings in Hawaii with those keywords.

Step 4 – When you get to the results page, assuming there are some results, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

RSS Icon

Click it.

Step 5 – You’ll probably come up with a page full of text that doesn’t make sense. Good. Click your cursor up into the URL address bar of your browser. Click at the end of the address shown so you don’t disturb what is in there. That’s the link you want to copy. Mine looks like the following:

http://honolulu.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=internet%20writer&sort=rel

For the following, on MAC computers you have a “COMMAND” key. For Windows users you have a “CONTROL” or “CTRL” key.

Once your cursor is up there, use two fingers on your keyboard to hold down these keys –  COMMAND and then ‘A’ key at the same time. You should see the entire address highlighted a different color than it was. Good.

Then let go of both of keys and again go to your keyboard and hold down the COMMAND and then ‘C’ keys at the same time. This copies the highlighted URL address into your device’s memory so you can ‘paste it’ later.

The above works for Windows or Mac operating systems.

Step 6 – Go back to Feedly.com and login to your account.

Step 7 – See this?

Feedly RSS Search Box

Click in that box so your cursor is there, ready to write something.

Don’t write anything, just go back to your keyboard and hold down the COMMAND key and the ‘V’ key at the same time. This should put the long URL address into this box.

RSS Feed Dropbox

Click on the Craigslist Hawaii rectangle.

Step 8 – See this?

Feedly Add Button

Click the Green +feedly box.

Step 9 – See this?

Add

You can choose to create folders to add your Craiglist feeds into, or just by default they go into the general mailbox. You can arrange them later as you get a lot of feeds added, maybe better to do it later.

Click the green Add box.

Step 10 – Read your feeds at Feedly whenever you want.

The cool thing about RSS is that every time there is an update with the feed at Craigslist Hawaii, it will give you the updated information. You don’t have to go searching for it. You can setup all your different searches for jobs on Craigslist with feedly so you only need to go to your feedly reader and read everything all in the same place. It’s easy and very handy.

You can get feedly for your phone or tablet too just by pulling it up in your favorite web browser and logging in.

Pretty cool tool, right?

About the Author:

I’ve lived Hawaii since the mid ‘80s when I moved here at the age of 21. I arrived site-unseen in Honolulu with zero contacts and about $5k in savings. I worked from nearly zero and today Hawaii has given me the greatest gifts in the world in all aspects: spiritually, financially, romantically (married since early ‘90s w/ 2 children), and most important, peace. My goal with this site is to share the magic of this Land of Aloha and help others who are on a similar quest.
