Ouch! Lahaina, Maui Shark Bite

Navigation:/, Maui/Ouch! Lahaina, Maui Shark Bite

A sixteen year old girl was bitten by a shark off the west coast of Maui in front of Hololani Resort and suffered a 5 inch gash on her calf. Beaches were closed for the day.

This location is exactly where I used to do some spearfishing years ago. I have never seen a shark in those waters, but a tigershark attacked a surfer further down the beach in Kahana while I was there.

There are turtles in that area – it is a very flat ridge that gets deeper very gradually, seems like more sharks would be spotted there. I don’t think there is a protective reef straight out from there, I was out pretty far (1/2 mile or so), and never saw a big reef.

Hololani Resort is located at the A in the map below:

About the Author:

I’ve lived Hawaii since the mid ‘80s when I moved here at the age of 21. I arrived site-unseen in Honolulu with zero contacts and about $5k in savings. I worked from nearly zero and today Hawaii has given me the greatest gifts in the world in all aspects: spiritually, financially, romantically (married since early ‘90s w/ 2 children), and most important, peace. My goal with this site is to share the magic of this Land of Aloha and help others who are on a similar quest.
